Truth is not created, it is discovered
All truth is discovered through the observation of nature
Anyone can discover truth in this way
All you need is your 5 senses
However, re-discovering all truth from its roots would take multiple lifetimes
No one has time for that
To save time we learn some truths from people who did take the time to observe nature directly
We read their books or listen to their spoken words
This requires that we trust the knowlege that they pass on
Yet we dont know them, how can we know if they are worthy of trust?
Fundamental knowlege about nature has been tested, challenged and confirmed over many years
Some of the simpler concepts can even be confirmed in simple ways by your own observation
But in the end we extend a lot of trust to our teachers
Most simply believe what they are told
Experts have always had agendas
In this way all knowlege is “tainted”
The only truth that we can trust is that which survives generations of shifting agendas
Be sceptical of “new” information that conflicts with the wisdom of our ancestors
Assume that its part of an agenda
We cant know an experts full agenda
That requires being a mind reader
(They may not even fully comprehend their own agenda)
Trusting an expert requires years of observation and careful comparison of their work, testing for the consistent production of truth
Test your experts
Testing for truth is easier than you think
First, depersonalise information that you take in
Its not about you or your preferences, its about discerning reality
Taking new information personality makes it emotional, that makes us easy to (self) manipulate
Be content with a sufficient degree of truth to decide how to live
You dont need to know EVERYTHING
Too much information hinders action
‘How much truth can a spirit bear, how much truth can a spirit dare? That became for me more and more the real measure of value.’ - Nietzsche
Discover truth by eliminating falsehoods
Whatever can not be falsified is a truth candidate
When new ideas are presented to you, test them using these 9 truth tests;
1⃣Identity (categorical consistency) 2⃣Logical (internal consistency) 3⃣Empirical (external correspondence)
(9 Truth tests)
4⃣Operational (existential possibility) 5⃣Rational (rational choice) 6⃣Reciprocal (reciprocally rational) 7⃣Complete (scope, limits, and parsimony) 8⃣Coherent (across all these tests) 9⃣Warranty (warranty of having performed these tests)
Explanations below
Categorical Consistency
Is what is said reasonable as a use of language? The sentence “I moon you trousers want ants in the ocean day” for example, simply makes no sense.
Are the definitions of the words used consistent in their application?
Logical (Internal) Consistency
Does what is said hold internal logical consistency?
Are there any self-contradictions in the statements or assertions themselves?
Operational (External) Correspondence
Is what you are saying justified by external reality?
The sentence “The sun will never shine again”, for example, has no external correspondence - because of course the sun will shine for us daily (at least for another billion years.
Existential Possibility
Is what you’re saying possible under scientific testimony?
Some people in the modern world, for example, self-identify as all manner of things.
Under scientific testimony, however, their assertion can be proven false based on their DNA.
Rational Choice
Is what is said (the conclusion) a rational thing to say in its own right?
We all make assumptions from time to time
This is required as we can not know all information.
Reasonable and logical< assumptions help us to move forward to right actions.
Reciprocal
Is what is being said reciprocal?
Does it impose unwarranted costs on another person?
Can another person verify the information and reach the same conclusions as the person making the claim?
Complete (Scope, Limits, Parsimony)
Has all the evidence been examined?
Has the evidence been examined from all perspectives?
Has it been studied at sufficient levels of detail?
Have all reasonable resources been used come to the conclusion?
Coherent
Is our understanding of truth coherent across all of these tests?
Does it still make sense after being put under the necessary scrutiny to appease each item on this list?
Warrantied
If the expert has his understanding questioned by others, could he prove that he has done his due diligence across these criteria to justify his comprehension of truth?
By testing experts & your assumptions you can independently get closer to the truth.
Try applying these tests to claims made by so called “experts”, what did you learn?
How many people are constantly on the side of truth?
Who is honest about their agendas?
Who can you trust?
Most people shouldn’t spend a lot of time deeply investigating obscure things.
Spend most of your time living and acting according to tested and ancient wisdom passed on from our ancestors.
Dont be in a hurry to throw away what has always worked to adopt new things.
