Teaching hundreds of millions of people how to read without teaching them how to think has been the greatest failure of western civilisation.

It does a man no good to be able to read if he can not think intelligently about what he reads. And yet our systems measure basic education based on “literacy” rates rather than on an ability to reason.

And it gets worse.

Subjecting unprepared minds to advanced knowlege, especially book learning, does not produce wisdom but rather arrogance. We have created a world of knowledgeable idiots.

In a single generation we could fix this problem. We simply need to make learning how to think fashionable again.
