What is an American?
What is an American?
A nation is, by definition, a group of closely related tribes (made up of even closer related families). It’s kin.
Nation (meaning born from the same people) is inherently racial and exclusionary. Its an extended kin group.
A country is a jurisdictional, political, legal entity that governs a set geographical area.
An empire is a group of countries under a single government or authority.
You can have a nation without a country (Kurds) or a country made of multiple nations (China) or an empire made up of multiple countries (Austro-Hungarian Empire).
The American founders, who were Anglos, explicitly founded the US for their posterity (descendants). It’s even written into the founding documents of the nation. See image included.
We can even stretch the definition of a heritage American to include those who helped settle the territory that the nation now occupies. But going farther risks removing any meaning from the term and is certainly contrary to the founders intentions.
So, when asking “what is an America” we must first ask the question “are we speaking about the American nation, country, or empire?”
