Traditionally the boy was taken away from his mother for a year of training. Thats not practical today.
The men performing the initiation, especially the father, impress upon the boys mind that he is no longer a baby who needs to go to mother over every fear and challange.
As he relies less on her his need to appease her and get her approval will diminish.
Instead he is to come to the men (esp father) for guidance and wisdom.
The men should bond with the boy by offering wisdom and opportunities to win honor.
