System to pick a role model (book mark this one)

My oldest (10) son’s class has been working on studying role models.

The method they suggested for picking his role model was not working for him; it was too touchy feely and too feminine.

Instead, he asked me to come up with a simple system to help him pick his role model for the project, which ended up being @jockowillink.

It’s so simple and easy. I’m going to share it with you below.

Step #1: Ask yourself: What is the one thing you would most like to improve about yourself? Write it down. Maybe you have several things you want to improve. Brainstorm them all into a short list.

Step #2: Disambiguate and concentrate. What do you mean when you say you need to improve on X? What would that look like in real life? What virtue(s) would give you the results you are looking for? Could multiple problems be solved by improving in one area?

Step #3: Find a person who most closely embodies the virtue(s) that you need to develop to improve the one thing that you need to work on and who shares their wisdom on that topic with the public. That’s your new role model.

Please keep in mind that role models only need to be applicable in one area. You might have a role model for discipline, a different one for relationships, and a different one for how you manage your career.

Here is how my son applied it:

Step #1: “I need to manage my time better and improve my concentration.”

Step #2: That was disambiguated and concentrated into “I need more self-discipline.”.

Step #3: Google, YouTube, and ChatGTP searches for who teaches discipline. He picked the most masculine-looking dude in the searches because that’s who boys want to learn from.

I would love to hear back from you if you use this system or teach it to your kids. It’s a fun conversation and activity to have with your children.
