Ladies, be careful of advice from other women.

My experience talking with hundreds of young women about advice they got from other women, sometimes even their own mothers, is that it was unreliable.

• Other young single women will sabotage you to get an advantage in the dating market over you.
• Older single women will sabotage you because they want to share their pain and justify their decisions.
• Unhappily married women will sabotage you because they project themselves onto your situation.
• Less attractive women will sabotage you because they are jealous of you.
• Your mother (or other older married family members) might sabotage you because she is jealous that you might do better than her or because she wishes to live vicariously through you.

Most women know about the female urge to sabotage other women, but they are unaware of their own sabotaging or undermining instincts. Only those who study sex differences in competition, problem solving, and cognition know why it happens.

Even if they don’t want to sabotage you, they may not accurately understand the issues that you need guidance on. Most people are just as lost as you are; asking them for advice is not productive.

So, who can you trust?

If I were a young woman looking for advice from another woman, I would pick one that met all of these characteristics:

• was equal, more attractive, or feminine than you.
• is at least half a generation older than you.
• is happily married.
• has happy, successful children.
• is known for giving excellent advice to young women.

Off the top of my head, I can think of two ladies that I would recommend:
