Historically, there are only three ways to be part of a nation:

  • You’re born into it.
  • You bleed for it.
  • Or you die for it.

In short, you give of yourself for the group rather than demand that the group accommodates you and your interests.

“To be of a nation is to be born into a lineage of sacrifice, not merely by blood, but by willingness to suffer, serve, and insure the future of its people.

The child inherits nationality through the sovereignty of the parent; the adult earns it by reciprocity. Citizenship may be granted, but nationality is demonstrated.

So it was with the Frankish knights, who forsook Frankishland and made Portugal their own, not by birthright, but by blood-right, when they bled beside Dom Afonso in the long war south.”
