2/ Barbara Walters wasn’t asking a question in good faith
2/ Barbara Walters wasn’t asking a question in good faith. She was launching a GSRRM attack:
- Guilt
- Shame
- Rallying
- Moralizing
- Manipulation
- Here’s how each played out…
3/ Shame She framed Connery’s past words as disgraceful, with tone and body language signaling: “You should feel ashamed for this.”
This is step one in the manipulation playbook—attack the person, not the argument.
4/ Moralizing The question implied that her worldview was morally superior.
There was no invitation to discuss—only to repent. It’s not a debate. It’s a moral trial.
5/ Rallying the Herd She counted on the audience’s emotional response. The unspoken message:
“Everyone watching agrees with me. You’re the outsider. Conform.”
6/ Frame Trap Walters framed the conversation so that Connery was already guilty.
He had only two “choices”: A) Apologize B) Be condemned
This is a false binary used to collapse your agency.
7/ But Connery didn’t flinch.
No apology. No shame. No emotional defense. He simply reaffirmed his position. Calm. Steady. Unmoved.
He rejected the premise—and with it, the manipulation.
8/ This is frame control in action.
And it’s exactly what I teach in my book: Become Immune to Manipulation: How They Are Manipulating You (And How to Resist It)
