This is why I waited until my oldest son was 7 before teaching him to read or reading to him directly from a book.

Instead, I would read a story, memorize it, and repeat it to him. This allowed me to customize the stories to our family’s ethics and aesthetics.

Additionally, he would be looking at my face and gestures while telling the story instead of at a book, which taught him how to read expressions.

If I didn’t repeat the story word for word, he would catch me on the change and correct the story.

He has no problem reading now and is at the level of his peers on that.
