My great-great-grandfather was 63, or maybe 67, we’re not entirely sure, when he married a young woman of about 30.

He left behind his poverty-stricken Scottish Highland village of black houses, oats, and sheep, and took her with him to Canada.

They were settlers in an unsettled land. There was no system to plug into. No subsidies. Unlike many modern immigrants who become a cost to society, they built society from the ground up.

They had four children. And my great-great-grandfather had one goal: to see all of his children happily married. Shortly after walking my great-grandmother down the aisle, he passed away. Old, satisfied, and surrounded by people who loved him.

That was a life well lived.
