::: Marriage Market Incentive Are Broken Part 1:::
Historically men and especially women were heavily incentivised by society to marry and stay married
Today, its basically the opposite
This is why marriage as an institution is on the decline

Historical incentives for men to marry #1:
Historically men had little incentive to marry and most did not
The only reason that was universal was that it enabled them to have children
Children were both free labor and your retirement plan, essential if you lived that long
Historical incentives for men to marry #2:
Sex, but not what you think.
Every city had its prostitutes and buying sex has ALWAYS been cheaper than marriage
Plus men had other less talked about options
A wife however meant clean, safe, socially acceptable sex
Historical incentives for men to marry #3:
A domestic partner (mostly applies to land owners)
This doesn’t mean just someone to cook and clean, its a partner in managing your holdings
This applies extra to the Aristocracy who valued skilled often disagreeable women as partners
But what about
Companionship? Most men prefer the company of other men
Social pressure? Men could always join the Church, military, go on raids, etc. Lots of ways to be an honourable man
Custom? Occasionally. Spartans preferred fighting to women, so they were required to marry
Historical incentives for women to marry #1:
Freedom
Single women were property of their fathers
They were expected to work, building his wealth to be inherited by their brothers
When they married they got their own domain, property, a husband & children to care for her
Historical incentives for women to marry #2:
Security
Women can not survive on their own without men
Modern women and a rare few historical women could afford to buy male protection
For most women marriage to a man of standing was their primary security, sons as secondary
But what about
Sex? Women have never needed to marry to get sex
They just had to exist
Money? Thats another word for Security
Social obligation? Thats just society wanting a specific man to provide Security and Freedom to a woman so she is not a community or parental burden
What about today?
What incentives have been broken or distorted in the modern marriage market?
That is for Part 2, coming later this week
What about warrior women???
No such thing
You are mistaking historical fiction for reality
Just like someone Watching Wonder Woman in 2000 years and thinking it was a historical documentary
If the women were fighting it was your last stand and you were about to all perish
