I have intentionally stacked potential negative consequences on myself for cheating/leaving.

I would lose:

My honor/reputation. My wife. My children. My friends (none would tolerate). My business.

I would have nothing. My wife is in a similar position.

Incentives matter.

A prenup removes negative incentives that make a divorce unpleasant. Divorce is supposed to be unpleasant. It is supposed to hurt.

The problem with modern divorce courts is that the pain is not evenly distributed. That creates non-reciprocal relationships.
