I have been living with a family that proves modern life is optional.

Four kids under eight. Tiny farm. They grow all their own food. They trade for what they do not produce. They live, comfortably, on a couple hundred dollars a month.

No car. Just a bicycle, a quad, and a tiny motorhome they take out now and then. They do not sell what they grow. They just eat it.

And they are happy.

We threw a party. Four other families, just like them, came. One borrowed a car to make the trip.

Everything we ate and drank, cheese, beer, bread, meat, vegetables, all came from the farms.

It is possible to live cheaply. To live well. To live freely.

You just have to be willing to do the hard work.
