A young woman told me yesterday that she doesn’t like to make eye contact with anyone she doesn’t really trust, only her boyfriend or a few close people. She said eye contact feels incredibly intense, even overwhelming. The same goes for social physical touch. Both can overstimulate her nervous system.
It got me thinking. How many of you experience social interaction like that? Do you find eye contact or physical closeness too intense unless it’s with someone you deeply trust?
I found it fascinating because my nervous system is wired the opposite way. I crave eye contact. I love human touch. I thrive on intense conversation and connection, even with strangers. I can lock in with someone I’ve just met, and I enjoy it.
It’s interesting how differently people are built. Some nervous systems pull back from connection, and others lean into it. I’d love to hear if this resonates with any of you.
