A cop got there seconds after me, purely by coincidence

He checked them, the mother was semi conscious for a few seconds, she screamed

The officer knew they were not going to make it

He broke down and started yelling/crying “why didn’t they wear a seat belt?”

I started walking towards the cars to help, pulling off my scarf (it was cold) thinking I could stop someones bleeding

The cop yelled at me and said “there is nothing we can do, stay away”

I kept walking, I was going to try, he grabbed me and got real serious

The officer who had approached me collapsed onto his knees, I tried to calm him down

I stayed as they removed the bodies and helped the police find debris from the car

There were parts 100 feet from the crash

The whole time I felt nothing

Just a responsibility to help

Several months later it hit me

I felt so sad for the dead children

And angry at their parents for not securing them

Looking back, it was a turning point in my life

I knew I could face horror and not break, unlike that police officer
