“I need a job. Something that earns more money than my last job.” - A new young friend.

“What do you do?” - Me

“Everything.”

“Everything is the same as saying nothing. No one does everything. What are you trained or skilled at doing? What are you good at?”

“I can do any job. I’m not afraid of hard work, and I can learn on the job.”

“That’s a good work ethic, but the reason you were earning minimum wage is because you don’t get paid big money to work hard; you get paid more if you work smart. You need some skill.”

“I don’t have any skills. I will just learn them on the job.”

It’s not the 1950s. No one is training unskilled workers and paying them big money for the privilege. Job number 1 is to develop a skill that you can base your career on.
