Growing up, I had a beautifully illustrated book of fairy tales that left a deep impression on me. It was dreamy, eerie, and oddly frightening, the perfect mix of wonder and fear that fairy tales are supposed to evoke. Unfortunately, the book hasn’t been in print since the 1970s, and my copy was destroyed by my brother years ago.

I recently tracked it down: Dean’s A Book of Fairy Tales (1977), illustrated by Janet and Anne Grahame Johnstone. Their artwork is unforgettable, sweet and terrifying at the same time. If you grew up with it, you know exactly what I mean. If you didn’t, it’s worth finding a copy.

They occasionally show up on eBay, AbeBooks, or ThriftBooks if you’re patient. I’m hunting for a good copy now to read with my children. This one deserves to be passed down.
